Appropriate Responses

I read the Rimfire Central community forum regularly. It is the one forum I contribute the most to as I don't have much going on with "The Beast" right now and I haven't been involved in shooting long enough to really add much value to most conversations. For whatever reason, about once or twice a week, a small group of folks complain about this or complain about that. Most of the time they are complaining because they don't have the riches that they see everyone else having. At least, that's my take on it.

Right now, they are complaining about the "American Dream". The question was posed whether or not the American Dream is still achievable. A story accompanied that question indicating that it was available for one individual. It was a story of what you can accomplish when you start with nothing and put your mind to doing it. I wholeheartedly believe that only in very rare cases is the American Dream unachievable. For everyone else, if they want something, their only option is to get off their duff and go get it.

The point of this post isn't to argue my point against theirs though. It's about responses to them. This is the best I have seen posted so far in a thread on "What is middle class?":

Dang! I had to double check to make sure I hand't logged into move-on.org by mistake!

I laughed out loud when I read that! It was very fitting. I have, for the longest time, desired to post my own response, but have resisted as I don't want to make enemies out of other forum members. You know the old adage, you catch more flies with honey than you do vinegar. Honestly, though, I'm not interested in having flies. They're too much of a tax burden if you ask me.

I'll leave you with the response I would post if I could just bring myself to doing it:

I think there's a false sense of that "overnight success" idea given off by tv, too.
I.E.: All the not so realistic "reality" shows (Big Brother, American Idol, etc.)
Oh, and that new disgusting looking one with the lie detector test... "Air your dirty laundry for cash and a shot at getting "discovered".
Bah.
But I digress...
The problem with many of the RFC crowd is that they don't understand that given the proper chance of non-government involvement, the free market will indeed run itself and if you are willing to do your own work, you *can* possibly make it big. BUT... this is the era of the "gimme something for nothing" crowd, who will then complain about the standards of their free hand out.

I'm all for letting the market work things out... It is a well known fact that Government involvement in things introduces corruption and waste. The Free Market has worked well for us for a long time.

All I care for in life is to be left alone. I will find ways to take care of my family. I don't need anyone else to do it for me. I don't want to be forced to help. I want to help because I see a person has genuine need and I can, along with others, offer caring assistance without the overhead of administrative costs.

People will be taken care of for the most part. There will always be sufferers no matter what you do. I'd rather they not suffer because we forced our way into their lives as is being done now.

True. If you see a homeless guy and you give him twenty bucks because you *want to*, he gets the benefit of twenty bucks.

If government taxes you for that same twenty bucks with the intentions of filtering it into a social program to help that homeless guy, by the time all the program heads and lawyers get their cut and the red tape costs are taken out...that guy probably gets the benefit of a solid four bucks. *Maybe*.

Exactly... That's also why I'm very selective about the charities I give to... Mainly because I care about what they believe and stand for, but also because I want to know that what I give is going to be effective.

Four bucks? Hmm... I think that's kind of stretching there. :p

OK, I cruched the numbers and it's $3.19- and subject to taxation :p

Oh, and I "crunched" the numbers, too.
*eyeroll at self*

Speaking of "subject to taxation"... If I remember correctly, our income tax return is considered income and gets taxed.

People have a warped view out our tax system and our tax returns. Many view it as bonus money at the end of the year. It's more like government mandated savings. It's our money. It always will be our money. It was already taxed!
